Born and raised in New Zealand but schooled in London, Flamingo Pier may well be the southern hemisphere’s best kept secret. But with one album and some serious live playing under their tightly-worn belts, that may about to end, as they plot a course back towards Europe and beyond for summer 2024.
Flamingo Pier are Luke Walker (the DJ), Dom Jones and Brad Craig (the musical chops), a rather perfect combo that you can hear in their music, with its electronic heft weighted lightly with tropical sounds atop, influences pouring in from all directions: Masters At Work, Khruangbin, Prince, Ron Trent.

Flamingo Pier announce new EP with the release of sleek new single, ‘How 2 Feel’
Off the back of their celebrated 2021 self-titled album, Tāmaki Makaurau disco-house DJs, producers, and party-throwers Flamingo Pier have announced new EP Beneath The Neon, due for release on September 1st via prolific New York-based dance label Razor-N-Tape (Midnight Magic, Tigerbalm, Frank Booker). The news arrives alongside the announcement of a global release tour with shows in Bali, UK, New York, Mexico, and New Zealand, and the projects lead single, 'How 2 Feel'.
The EP's blissful lead single 'How 2 Feel' fuses Flamingo Pier's signature loungey, disco deep-house atmospheres with faster club-paced BPM's, swirling four-on-the-floor rhythms, soulful vocal melodies, and a sleek saxophone solo from Jack Thirtle (Avantdale Bowling Club, Dave Dobbyn). Of the lead single, Flamingo Pier's Luke Walker shares: “We wanted to create something big enough to play to a few thousand people but with a warm and soulful vibe."
RNT label's JKriv shares of the release, "I actually met the guys for the first time at the Flamingo Pier Waiheke Festival this year. I've been a big fan of FP's earlier releases, and it turned out they had an EP ready that needed a home. Everything just clicked, and we're all super stoked to be working together on this release!"
Flamingo Pier's Luke Walker adds: “We’ve been big fans of RNT since we started as a collective, and we’re so excited to be releasing with them. This new EP is our sweet spot — all upbeat and playable club and dance-ready tracks. Pure fun and good times.”
‘In My Room’ With
Flamingo Pier
Currently midway through their Aotearoa tour, local dancefloor legends Flamingo Pier served up fresh tunes and summer vibes for Rolling Stone AU/NZ with their ‘In My Room’ session.
Known for their hugely popular homegrown Waiheke Festival, the group recently released their new EP, Beneath the Neon, on Brooklyn dance label Razor-N-Tape (Midnight Magic, Tigerbalm, Kiwi Frank Booker), along with a disco-infused music video for the catchy title track.
The EP packs in three party-starting tracks, enhanced by remixes from Chicago house icon Glenn Underground and Razor-N-Tape co-founder JKriv, with a special guest appearance by Afro-boogie icon Steve Monite.
For their ‘In My Room’ session, Flamingo Pier played songs from their aforementioned EP, including the title track, “How 2 Feel”, and “Remedy”.
Although they weren’t really in their room at all: the group’s session was recorded during a stop in Mexico at a dreamy retreat while they were on their global tour, which also saw them share their dancefloor-ready sound with audiences in places as far-flung as Bali, London, and Berlin.
Flamingo Pier’s New Zealand tour ends with a multi-room show at Hollywood Avondale in Auckland on Friday, October 27th, featuring special guests like Frank Booker and LOU’ ANA. Their final performance will then be at Theatre Royal in New Plymouth on Saturday, October 28th.
Previously, Flamingo Pier have released music on the UK’s Soundway Records, including their self-titled debut album in 2021, which featured memorable guest appearances from Julien Dyne, Nathan Haines, and Jess Penson (Kédu Carlö).
You can watch Flamingo Pier’s full ‘In My Room’ session above. The group’s remaining national tour dates are below.
Flamingo Pier’s Beneath the Neon EP is out now, with vinyl freshly landing at local record stores.
FLAMINGO PIER – DEEPER SOUL [SOUNDWAY RECORDS]
If you were to think say that Flamingo Pier have become stalwarts of Soundway Records as of late, then you would be absolutely correct. The New Zealand based collective of Dominic, Brad and Luke have developed a blossoming relationship with the label since the release of their self titled ‘Flamingo EP’ back in 2019. Fast-forward 2 years; having navigated through the midst of a global pandemic, the trio are now set to release their debut album ‘Flamingo Pier LP’. This long-play encapsulates the unique sound that the trio have established over the past few years that has come to incorporate elements of funk, disco, and jazz, all built around Afro-centric percussive elements.
Deeper Soul is somewhat of a departure from the upfront, cut-loose dancefloor vibe that harnesses the majority of this album. Staying true to its name; ‘Deeper Soul’ has its foundations in a substantially more downtempo, stripped back approach. It’s psychedelic influence hides in plain sight, organic afro-inspired percussion underpinning the calming synth top-lines that gently meander throughout courtesy of an abundance of reverb, delay, and modulation; whilst the hypnotic, funk-laden baseline injects a feeling of nostalgia that supplements the overall groove in beautiful fashion. It’s hard to pull yourself out of the time-warp of yesteryear after listening to this one!
